Aims and objectives

The program aims to train mental health professionals in trauma-informed therapy and equip them with the necessary knowledge and competencies.

Based on recent research on the targeted treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD), the main objectives of the training are to:

Provide the context for participants to become acquainted with trauma-informed therapy (APA, 2017).
Examine the etiology and neurobiology of Acute traumatic stress, PTSD and Complex PTSD.
Provide the framework for learning and practicing the competencies for treating psychological trauma (APA, 2015).
Present the phases of trauma therapy and facilitate participants to apply them in case studies or with their clients.
Facilitate understanding of presenting symptoms in the light of dissociation.
Explain Parts Work and supervise participants while practicing with their clients.
Delve deeper into the role of the trauma-informed therapist, the value of the therapeutic relationship, and the importance of self-care.
Recognize and apply the key components of resilience and posttraumatic growth.
Provide trauma-informed supervision.

Theoretical approach

This trauma informed training is based on the following theoretical approaches:

Phasic approach to treating psychological trauma

The phases of trauma treatment involve distinct therapeutic goals that interact with each and facilitate:

  • Stabilization and safety.
  • Consolidation and reinforcement of thinking and emotion regulation skills.
  • Trauma processing, re-examination and re-evaluation of symptoms and traumatic memory.
  • Transition from treatment to healthy functioning and smooth reintegration into social life (Herman, 1992).

Parts work therapy

Parts Work therapy functions as a therapeutic lens which assumes that each person has many different parts in their mind, psyche, and personality. They also have multiple and sometimes conflicting emotions, thoughts, and impulses, each of which is referred to and treated as a “part” (Steele et al., 2016; Fisher, 2016; Schwartz, 2021). Parts Work helps individuals create new, creative, and functional solutions to the problems they face, as it recognizes and understands the unique composition of their inner psychological world.
